So You Bought A Rose, Now What Do you Do?
by Mitchie Moe

Before you grab a shovel, think about the location - can it get 5 to 6 hours of sun per day? does the chosen location have drainage? Remember the way you plant your rose is one of the most important steps in growing roses.

Steps in planting a rose

1. if bare root - soak well. Overnight minimum, 24 hours is better

2. If foil wrapped, boxed or potted - remove rose from container.

3. Dig a big hole 12 to 18 inches deep that has good drainage, wide enough to allow the plant's roots to develop.

4. Trim off any broken roots or stems.

5. make a soil mix using 1/3 soil, 1/3 coarse perlite and 1/3 organic compost, manure or Tagro.

6. Toss in a handfull of super phosphate in the bottom of the hole. Build a mound of soil in the hole to support the roots and hold the plant at the proper height, with the bud union at ground level. Do NOT use any fertilizer containing nitrogen!

7. Spread the roots over the mound (figure A) and fill the hole 2/3rds full with the soil mixture. Tamp lightly, fill with water (figure B) and let soak a few minutes and then fill the hole with the soil mix.

8. Mound the soil up around the canes 6 to 8 inches. (figure C) More roses die from drying out then poor planting. This protects the canes until the roots become established and can take up moisture. Carefully remove in two to three weeks when you see new growth on the canes.

9. Water well. Continue throughout the growing season.

Roses are sold in a variety of ways.
