This is by no means a complete list of roses
available. It's just a short list of some that have good ARS
ratings and we have growing in our gardens. Check out the
reviews below by some of our members. We may not all be champion
rose growers yet, but we know what we like and what works
for us. Feel free to let us know if you've had different experiences
with the roses we review.
What our members say
This from Bob...Rio Samba (yellow
blend) Our rose gardens consist mostly of Hybrid Teas
and Floribudas. While over the years I have shown a talent
for killing several different varieties, in the case of
Rio Samba I thought I had developed my finest lethal touch.
Because it is such an attractive rose, I've experimented
with three of them over a five-year period in two different
beds, where other Hybrid Teas flourished. In each case the
Rio Samba showed a promising beginning, modest decline by
midseason and frailty by fall. Each survived a winter, showed
signs of life when raised in the spring, then withered.
Each was more susceptible to disease than other varieties.
One developed some sort of awful bulbous white fungus near
the bud union, which I cured with a knife and Clorox, but
the plant died anyway. If other varieties in the same beds
had proved as frail, I would attribute the demise of the
Rio Sambas to my talent for deadly treatment. Since the
others thrived, I conclude that the fault lies in the plant's
genes rather than mine. RJW, Minneapolis, MN 1/2001

red)

with a loose appearance. Blooms are one to a stem. Several

as big as my outstreched hand, intense mauve pink color.
My neighbors all commented about this one. Can't wiat to
see it in its second year. Don't try to refrigerate this
one-- it will turn brown. PNL, Brooklyn Center, MN 3/01
