Rose of the Month ~ August
2002
Robusta
This month's rose is Robusta. I was able to see it at Penny's
last year and Darlene's this year, and it definitely showed
itself to be hardy, disease resistant and quite a bloomer.
But watch out for those thorns! Which, if you're creating
a hedge for privacy might be a plus. Anyway, the bush is very
vigorous and the blooms were lovely.
Robusta is a Hybrid Rugosa medium-red shrub bred by Kordes
and introduced in 1979. It earned a whopping 9.5 rating from
the ARS. It's a single, boasting 5 crimson red petals with
yellow stamens and the blooms are large with a moderate fragrance.
It's hardy to Zone 3 and is happier in the cooler climates.
It generally grows 5-7' high and 3-4' wide. Take a look at
photos from Penny and Darlene's gardens and rate this month's
