Rose of the Month ~ April 2002

Country Dancer

April's rose is the Buck shrub rose Country Dancer, introduced in 1973 by Dr. Griffith Buck.
Country Dancer has cupped, deep pink flowers on an upright, spreading bush. The petals drop off cleanly when finished and have a moderate clove scent. Foliage is leathery which seems to resist disease; continuous bloom throughout the season. Photos are of a first year plant in Elena's garden. No experience with winter hardiness yet, but pink Buck roses are known to do well in Dakota County, MN. The hybridizer worked to produce plants that are winter hardy in Iowa, "Dr. Griffith Buck was 20 years ahead of his time."
